Common Car Problems that Cause No Start as Seen by our Morgan Hill Mechanics

At Fred’s Foreign & Domestic Car Repair, our nearby mechanics see many problems, but few are as frustrating for vehicle owners as ones that prevent starting. There are numerous issues that can cause a vehicle engine to be unable to start, but thankfully most are relatively minor. If your vehicle’s engine is suffering from no start trouble, it is probable that one of the following issues is the root cause. Reach out to our local auto shop in Morgan Hill for further diagnostics and repairs.

Why Won’t My Car Start?

  • Dead Battery: The most common no start issue is a dead battery. If you turn the key in the ignition and nothing happens, including not having lights, a dead car battery is probably the case. In most cases the battery can be jumped to start the engine and the battery should recharge thanks to the alternator. However, if the battery does not recharge, it likely needs to be replaced.
  • Fuel Delivery Problem: Your car requires fuel if it is going to run. There are a few reasons that gasoline may not make it to the engine. The primary issues that cause poor fuel delivery include a failed fuel pump, a clogged fuel filter or malfunctioning fuel injectors.
  • Failed Starter: The starter motor is essentially what spins the engine when you turn the key. If you hear a loud click when trying to start your car, it is likely that the starter motor is malfunctioning. Another sign of a failed starter is if your vehicle’s lights turn on, but the engine doesn’t spin when you turn the key..
  • Bad Alternator: Using the motion of the engine the alternator creates the electricity that powers electrical components of your vehicle while the engine is on, such as the lights, and the onboard computer system. Excess electricity is stored in the battery to help start the car. If the alternator fails the battery will be drained of its power, resulting in a car that won’t start.
  • Ignition Problem: If you can’t turn the key at all, you’re not going to be able to get the vehicle started. The inability to do so may be due to a bad ignition switch, or in some cars, a locked steering wheel. To free the ignition, try rocking the steering wheel back and forth and turning the key at the same time.
